Airport Bridge

Location: Greenbriar County, West Virginia

Owner: West Virginia Department of Transportation

Description:  The new Airport Bridge is a two lane, three span replacement structure that carries WV Route 60 traffic over Howard Creek.

Superstructure: This bridge has three spans, 76’-82’-76’. The concrete deck is 43’-6” wide and 8 1/2” thick. The slab is supported on six W33x152 rolled beams. Beam ends at both abutments bear on 1/4” thick elastomeric bearing pads and are fully integral with the abutments. At the piers, the beams rest on 10”x20” steel reinforced elastomeric bearing pads. Since this bridge has integral abutments, expansion devices were not used.

Substructure:  Both abutments are fully integral with the superstructure. They are each supported on a single row of HP12x53 steel bearing piles. Both piers are multi-column piers with four columns. Each column is supported by a single 54” diameter drilled shaft.

Special Considerations: To accommodate traffic and prevent backups during construction, a two-lane temporary bridge was installed. Construction time and methods were limited by environmental concerns.
