Location: Athens, West Virginia
Owner: Town of Athens
Description: The project consisted of a number of improvements to the existing 250,000 gallons per day extended aeration wastewater treatment plant. The plant suffered from low dissolved oxygen levels in the aeration tank, broken clarifier scrapers, an inadequate sulfur dioxide addition point, no sludge dewatering capabilities and a nonfunctioning grit chamber.
Treatment System Improvements: All new diffusers and piping were installed in the aeration tank. Both the number of diffusers and the number of airdrop pipes were increased. The broken blades on the clarifier scraper arm were replaced. A new effluent box and weir were installed to improve the efficiency of sulfur dioxide addition and dechlorination. An existing sludge drying bed was converted into a sludge holding and decanting tank. A sludge pump station was added to aid in decanting and sludge wasting. The grit chamber was cleaned and re-piped and placed back in service.
Construction Cost: $200,000.00 (Labor supplied by Town Forces)
