B&O Railroad Underpass Bridge

Location: Barbour County, West Virginia

Owner: West Virginia Department of Transportation

Description:  The B&O Underpass Bridge carries two lanes of Route 19 traffic over the B&O (CSX) Railroad.

Superstructure: This bridge has four continuous spans, 85’-90’-102’-78’. The concrete deck is 33’-6” wide and 8 1/2” thick. The slab is supported on five continuous curved plate girders. The expansion bearing shoe is a steel rocker plate and stem assembly between the sole and masonry plates. The fixed bearing shoe utilizes the stem assembly rigidly attached to the masonry plate. All masonry plates are restrained by anchor bolts. Strip seals were used to accommodate expansion and contraction.

Substructure:  Both abutments are stub abutments on steel bearing piles. The piers are multi-column and have footings on piles. Crash walls are built into the piers to protect them in the event of a train collision.
