Location: Mullens County, West Virginia
Owner: West Virginia Department of Transportation
Description: The Clearfork Coatings Bridge is a new bridge that will provide access for Clearfork Coatings Company to their new facility. It crosses over the Guyandotte River.
Superstructure: This bridge has 2 spans at 115 each for a total bridge length of 230. The deck was designed with the LRFD empirical method and is 32-6 wide. Girders are straight steel plate girders with 48 deep webs. They utilize HPS70W steel in the negative moment region over the pier. At the pier, the girders rest on steel reinforced elastomeric bearing pads.
Substructure: Both abutments are fully integral with the superstructure and are supported on piles. The wall pier is supported on three 42 diameter drilled shafts. The substructure units are skewed 30 degrees to the roadway.
Special Considerations:
- The bridge design was a fast track project due to the needs of Clearfork Coatings for access to their facility. Design was completed on schedule.
- Topography at the south end of the bridge challenged the design team in the design of the abutment and retaining wall system.
