Location: Beckley, West Virginia
Owner: Mountain State University
Structural System: The structural system consists of structural steel with reinforced concrete shear walls and wind-resisting moment connections to carry lateral loads. The first floor and part of the second floor is slab-on-grade, while the remainder of the floors consist of concrete on composite steel deck supported by structural steel beams. The ballasted roof is carried by steel joints. Columns are supported on spread footings and full-height reinforced concrete retaining walls. The exterior facade is brick with steel stud backup.
Special Considerations: A steeply sloping site coupled with extremely limited clearance between the building and South Kanawha Street required the extensive use of reinforced concrete retaining walls.
Construction Cost: $650,000
