Stollings-Logan Road, Section 02

Location: Logan County, West Virginia

Owner: West Virginia Department of Transportation

Description: This new 12 mile, four lane highway with 26 feet of median was designed to replace what has been called by USA Today as one of the most dangerous roads in America. The highway carries State Route 10 from Man to Logan.

L.A. Gates Company did the Design Study for the Man to Logan State Route 10 and then started the Stollings-Logan Road, Section 02 project which is the first of the State Route 10 proposed improvements to be constructed. Because of the rugged terrain, Section 02 is the largest earth moving highway design project in the history of the firm. It includes a 4,000,000 cubic yard cut in about 3600 feet of roadway construction. The project came in under budget due in part to the excavation cost, at $2.67/cy, which was one of the lowest excavation costs seen on a major earth-moving project in over 30 years in West Virginia. The project also has over 4400 feet of storm drainage pipe ranging in size from 18 to 72 inch diameter and has 30 drainage structures. This section of State Route 10 climbs on a 6 percent grade from the Guyandotte River up through the mountains and behind the community of Midelburg.

The completed State Route 10 will provide a safe and modern transportation facility for the traveling public of Southern West Virginia.

L.A. Gates Company was chosen as one of only five finalists in the West Virginia Division of Highways Commissioners 1999 Engineering Achievement Award in the Large Roadway Project Category for the Stollings-Logan Road Project.
