Logan Bridge No. 3

Existing Site
Location:  Logan County, West Virginia

Owner:  West Virginia Department of Transportation

Description:  This bridge carries two lanes of traffic on WV Route 17 across Dingess Run, WV Route 10 bridge, and CSX Railroad Bridge in the town of Stollings, WV. The alignment includes a 6% grade and a horizontal curve.

Superstructure:  This bridge has three spans, 230’-190’-155’ for a total bridge length of 575’. The bridge is 32’-6” wide with standard concrete traffic barriers on each side. The deck slab is supported by four continuous weathering steel plate girders with 90” deep webs. HPS70W steel was used in the negative moment regions over the piers. Modular Expansion Dams were used to accommodate temperature expansion and contraction.

Substructure:  The bridge piers have hammerhead caps on solid concrete columns. Both piers are supported on single drilled shafts. One abutment is supported on drilled shafts and the other abutment is on a spread footing.

Special Considerations:  Access to the desired Pier 1 location was very limited, and many construction alternatives were investigated. As a result, it was determined that the first span of the bridge should be spanned across both the railroad bridge and the highway bridge.
