Description: The new Muddy Creek Bridge is a two lane, two span replacement structure that carries two lanes of WV Route 3 traffic over Muddy Creek. The bridge was designed using the AASHTO LRFD Code.
Superstructure: This bridge has two spans, each 66 in length, for a total bridge length of 132. The concrete deck is 37-6 wide and 8 1/2 thick. The deck slab is supported on five straight 45 deep AASHTO Type III prestressed concrete beams which are continuous for live load. Beam ends at both abutments bear on 1/4 thick elastomeric bearing pads and are integral with the abutments. At the pier, the beams are supported on steel reinforced elastomeric bearing pads. Since this bridge has integral abutments, deck expansion devices were not used.
Substructure: One abutment is fully integral with the superstructure and the other is semi-integral. The fully integral abutment is supported on a single row of steel bearing piles. The semi-integral abutment is supported on a spread footing. The pier has a solid shaft hammerhead configuration and is supported on a spread footing.
