- Layout and design of outside facilities for several large coal mine projects, including roads, bridges, railroad, site grading, pollution control, refuse disposal and fresh water supply.
- Structural design of highway and railroad bridges. Involved several types of bridge design, including a major highway bridge for Appalachian Corridor "Q". This bridge is located in both a vertical and horizontal curve and is over 600 feet long and 120 feet high.
- Structural design of commercial, industrial and residential buildings.
- Design for airport runway construction. As assistant manager of the Raleigh County Airport Authority design project, Mr. Long was substantially involved in the design and the writing of the specifications for the construction of Runway 1-19 at the Raleigh County Memorial Airport.
- Involved in site selection, site development, drainage, cost estimate, structural and foundation design, and construction administration at West Virginia University Football Stadium
