Russellville Bridge

Location: Greenbrier County, West Virginia

Owner: West Virginia Department of Transportation

Description:  The new Russellville Bridge is a two lane, four span replacement structure that carries County Route 2 traffic over the Meadow River.

Superstructure: This bridge has four spans of 70’-90’-90’-70’ for a total bridge length of 320’. The concrete slab is 26’-6” wide and 8 1/2” thick. The slab is supported on four W36x150 rolled beams. Beams rest on steel reinforced elastomeric bearing pads at the piers. Since this bridge has integral abutments, expansion devices were not used.

Substructure: Both Abutments are a fully integral with the superstructure and are supported by steel bearing piles. The piers are all wall piers supported by three 42” diameter drilled shafts.

Special Considerations:

  • The existing bridge is slightly upstream of the new site, and in between the two bridges a tributary flows into the river.  This complicated the hydraulics of the river and creek and challenged designers.
