Switzer/Monty Brothers Bridge

Existing Site
Location: Logan County, West Virginia

Owner: West Virginia Department of Transportation

Description:  The new Switzer/Monty Brothers Bridge is a replacement for the aging existing bridge. The bridge carries Route 44 traffic over Island Creek.

Superstructure: This bridge has 3 spans at 45’-58’-46’ for a total bridge length of 149’. The alignment includes a horizontal curve as well as a turn lane at one end of the bridge. The bridge is 39’-3” wide which includes a 5’-0” wide sidewalk. Modular Expansion Dams were used to accommodate the expansion and contraction. The girders rest on steel reinforced elastomeric bearing pads.

Substructure:  Abutment 1 is supported by piles and both piers and Abutment 2 are on spread footings. The substructure units are on a 60 degree skew as well as being on a ±6 degree horizontal curve.

Special Considerations:

  • Complicated geometry in this structure made the design especially challenging. The combination of skewed piers and abutments, curved girders, and a turn lane at one end made for a difficult design.
