Watoga State Park Dam Modification and Lake Dredging

Location: Pocahontas County, West Virginia

Owner: West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation

Description: The existing Dam consisted of an earth embankment with a concrete lined open channel spillway and a gated corrugated steel pipe for an emergency pond drain. The dam was constructed for recreational use in the 1930's. The dam was considered unsafe because the spillway capacity was considerably less than required by modern design standards. The project consisted of the construction of a larger concrete lined open channel spillway and raising the embankment approximately seven feet. A high-density polyethylene pipe was used to line the deteriorated pond drainpipe and a new gate was installed at the upstream end. The 13 acre lake was also dredged to improve recreation use.

Construction Cost: $760,000

Completion Date: January 2000
